May Day, the International Labour Day, originated in 1886 when workers in the city of Chicago

in the United States went on a general strike for the implementation of the eight-hour working

day. The strike was suppressed by the police by force, but the strong force of working class unity

and fighting forced the capitalists to make concessions, and this general strike of the American

workers was victorious, eventually winning the eight-hour working day.

In July 1889, the Second International, led by Friedrich Engels, held a congress in Paris to

commemorate the May Day strike of the American workers and to promote the struggle of

workers for the eight-hour working day, and the congress passed a resolution to designate

May 1 as International Labour Day, a national holiday in more than 80 countries around the

world.

Every Labour Day, countries around the world hold various forms of celebrations, such as

commemorative performances for the workers' movement, award ceremonies for models of

labour, tourism and entertainment. However, the customary activities vary from country to country
