The Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping Festival) is one of the four traditional Chinese festivals, along with the Spring
Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is also one of the twenty-four solar terms. Qingming
usually changes between the 4th and 6th of April in the Gregorian calendar and is not fixed to a particular day, but the
5th of April is the most common. This year it is the 5th of April. It is a cultural and traditional festival that honours the
ancestors and remembers the past. The Qingming Festival embodies the spirit of the nation, inherits the sacrificial culture
of Chinese civilisation, and expresses the moral sentiment of people to respect their ancestors, and to follow their own
paths. The Qingming Festival has a long history, stemming from early human beliefs in ancestors and the rituals of spring
festivals.
In fact, apart from China, Qingming Festival is also celebrated in some other countries and regions around the world, such
as Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.
Tomb sweeping and ancestor worship - the centrepiece of Qingming Festival customs. In some places, Qingming tomb
sweeping is called "sweeping the mountain", "worshipping the Qing" or "worshipping the mountain", out of respect for the
ancestors. For example, in the northern part of the country, the Qingming Festival is called "tomb sweeping", while in the
southern coastal area, in order to avoid the words "tomb" and "grave", it is euphemistically called "mountain worshipping.
One of the ancient meanings of the word "shan" is "grave", and nowadays public opinion still refers to the direction of a
grave as "shan xiang The "mountain" of worship is divided into There are two types of "mountain" to be worshipped: one
is the ancestor's ancestors from the parents up to the ancestors within three generations, called "family mountain", and
the worship of the family mountain is called "family festival"; the other is the worship of the ancestors of the clan, called
The other type of worship is for the ancestors of the clan, called "Ancestral Hill" and "Public Hill", and the worship of the
ancestral hill is called "Sweeping the Public Hill".
