Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is expected to start in 2023 from 23 March to 21 April,
based on lunar observations.
In this auspicious month of Muslim fellowship and prayer, between sunrise and sunset each day, they purify
their character, discipline themselves and increase their restraint and self-discipline through forms of fasting
such as 'abstaining from eating'.
When the sun goes down, the Maghrib begins. A cannon booms to mark the end of the day's fasting. Iftar
tents are erected throughout the city for a time of dining and socialising. Many restaurants offer special
Ramadan menus, serving a wide range of traditional local dishes. This period will be extremely rich in nightlife,
with streets and shopping malls decorated with lights and glitter.
Ramadan lasts for around 30 days until the next new moon rises. Once it ends, Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated to
mark the end of the fast.
